The First Meeting with Altai

The village of Chemal, located in the Altai Republic, was founded in the middle of the 19th century. Translated from Altai Chemal means "anthill with ants." At first, only 30 families settled here. In 1849, a missionary camp was formed in the village, and at the end of the 19th century Chemal became famous for its climate, which made it possible to form a hydrotherapy resort. Scientists and various layers of the intelligentsia came here to rest. One of the attractions of Chemal is Patmos Island with an Orthodox church built in 1849. There is also the women's skete of John the Theologian of the Barnaul Znamensky Monastery. In order to see these holy places, you will have to overcome a long and wobbly suspension bridge over the Katun River. Back in 1935, the Chemal hydroelectric power station was built. Today, the hydroelectric power station is another attraction of this region, here they make excursions around the station and have opened for fans of extreme sports such attractions as "tarzanka" (for jumping with belay into the discharge of the hydroelectric power station), "rope town". In addition, it is possible to rent water equipment for rafting and fishing, rent horses for excursions along the mysterious paths of Chemal.

In the TOP-10 of the most beautiful roads in the world, the National Geographic magazine also included the Chuisky tract in Altai. It became the first full-fledged road connecting Russia and China. Most roads have no history. More precisely, they certainly have a history, but no one except road builders knows it. The Chuisky tract is quite another matter! This road has a rich history, even school textbooks tell about it. The fact is that on the site of the modern route, a thousand years ago, the Mungalsky route passed, along which goods were transported from Russia to China and back. Of course, this was not the Great Silk Road, but it was also of great importance. Chuisky tract is in great demand among auto, motorcycle and bicycle tourists. This is due not only to the picturesque landscapes that the road abounds in, but also to the large number of remarkable places located in the immediate vicinity of the highway. Altai is famous for its burial mounds, they are referred to as the so-called Nazir culture. In some burials, mummies were found - exactly the same as in Egypt! Some mounds are over 5000 years old!
